The switch is actually triggered when the door is closed.
The magnetic sensor and speaker wire are optional.
I did coonect it to a sensor so it will show that the sensor has been triggered or not in the wemo app.
Seeing most garage doors have terminals on them to connect up a push button switch it is pretty easy to connect up a smart device that can trigger the door when we did this the only option in our region was using a wemo maker.
If you just want to be able to open or close your garage door then the wemo maker will suffice.

I ran both the magnetic door sensor wiring added the 22 2 wiring for length as well as a cat5 cable i had connected to the garage door opener ports red white on the garage door to my master closet.
The wemo alerts will appear on the lock screen.
Darlington npn transistor 1 50 or a relay 2 5 i like the darlington as it is cheaper and solid state and easier to wire up but depending on your specific garage door a relay may be a better solution genie garage doors have a lower contact voltage and a darlington can not bring it close enough to ground to.
A while back a mate asked me to connect his garage door to his phone.
I use ifff to pair the maker with my wemo light switch so i can use a long press on the switch to open my garage door.
If you want to know when the garage door is open or closed then you will need them.
